He has also worked on the development of health research reporting and clinical practice guidelines beginning with the CONSORT guidelines in 2000. Recently he led the development of reporting guidelines for case reports—the CARE Guidelines. The CARE guidelines were simultaneously published in seven medical journals and presented at the Chicago Congress on Peer Review and Biomedical Publication sponsored by JAMA and the BMJ in 2013. The CARE writing templates and checklists are available in 7 languages and have been accepted as the standard for published case reports. Dr. Riley is trained in a variety of integrative medicine disciplines; prior to beginning medical school at Georgetown University in 1979 he worked as a musician and chef in Europe and the United States.

Since 2006 Dr. Riley has consulted with The Center for Healthcare Planning and Quality (CPQ) in Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC) to help establish and maintain international best practice standards. Dr. Riley approaches medicine with the belief that in addition to medical interventions, health and healing often come from unexpected places including family, friends, and the communities in which we live. He consults and lectures in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East on healthcare research and education, regulation, and policy. David is married and lives in Portland, Oregon.
