Prof. Peter Matthiessen: Medical studies in Marburg, Germany, and Washington State University Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. Doctoral thesis in 1971. From 1971 to 1975 research fellow at the Anatomy Institute I of the Philipps-Universität Marburg. Further training and board certifications in neurology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy in Herdecke and Dortmund.

From 1980 to 1983 senior physician at the University Mental Hospital in Marburg. Co-founder of the University of Witten/Herdecke. Scientific and administrative management of the publicly funded research projects “Unconventional Methods of Cancer Control“ (UMK) and “Unconventional Medical Directions“ (UMR) on behalf of the German Federal Government from 1986 to 1996.

From 1983 to 2004 chief physician at the model department of Adolescent and Young Adult Psychiatry at the Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus (Community Hospital) in Herdecke. Habilitation in 1992. From 1996 to 2009 holder of the Gerhard Kienle endowed chair for Medical Theory and Complementary Medicine at the University of Witten/Herdecke.

Numerous publications on medical theory, plurality of paradigms in medicine, and complementary medicine. Editor of a series of publications on plurality in medicine („Perspektiven – Schriften zur Pluralität in der Medizin), published by VAS publishing company. Since 2000 co-founder, from 2009 to 2014 vice speaker, and since 2014 chair of the speakers council of the Dialog Forum Pluralism in Medicine.
